Think about it… How many kinds of food do we eat every day? How many kinds of work do we do, sometimes junk food, sometimes fried food, and many more? But inside our body, an invisible hero is taking care of all the troubles without our knowledge, and we don’t realise anything – it is our liver.
Now I’m writing about it, but when I first studied this topic, frankly, I was surprised—it carries such a big responsibility and yet we don’t take proper care of it! So, in my personal opinion it is very important to be aware of it. Why am I saying so much, you will know the details below.
What is the Liver?
The liver is actually a large gland. Many people think the heart does the most work—yes, that’s right. But that doesn’t mean the liver works less because it does more than 500 jobs every day! Hence, it is called “Body’s Chemical Factory”. Just think, does more than 500 tasks in a day alone!
Structure / Anatomy
The liver has two large lobes: the Right lobe and the Left lobe. Inside are thousands of tiny liver cells called hepatocytes. They are just like factory workers – working non-stop. A doctor friend of mine once told me, “The liver is the only organ in the body that can repair itself even after 70% damage!” I was really surprised to hear.
Location
The liver is located on the upper right side of the abdomen, just below the diaphragm. Lean right. The liver is constantly working in that area.
Functions
Earlier, I said that the liver does many functions, but it is not possible to write 500 functions, so I have written some of its main functions below:
- The liver converts nutrients into usable energy.
- Detoxifies excess body toxins, chemicals, drugs, etc.
- Produces bile to break down fat.
- Helps in blood clotting.
- Stores vitamins A, D, E, K, and B12 for future requirements.
Apart from these, it alone balances the digestive system through many other important functions of the liver.
How It Works
Suppose you play Khichuri. After digestion, nutrients from the intestines travel to the liver for processing. The liver breaks them down-
- Keeps some energy,
- sends something into the blood,
- Filters out what the body does not need.
While talking, the tea-eating people remembered one thing Inside our body, the liver is just like a tea strainer. Keep what is needed, filter out the rest.
Common Diseases & Disorders
It is very important to take care of it, because most of it is due to our lack of care and a bad lifestyle. For example:
- Fatty liver
- Hepatitis (A, B, C)
- Liver cirrhosis
- Jaundice
- Liver failure
The most common of these is fatty liver, especially in those who drink a lot of alcohol, processed foods, fried oil, insulin-resistant, etc. One thing – we clean or take care of our outer body with soap, oil, lotion and other things, but have you ever thought about our inner condition? We don’t pay attention to that. But for a very important organ like the liver, we must pay attention, right? Think about it…
Symptoms of an Unhealthy Liver
Most of the time the liver is silent, but sometimes the body gives signal, something like –
- If you gets tired very easily it can be a symptom
- Pain or tight feeling on the right side of the stomach
- Indigestion of food
- Yellowing of the skin
- Feeling like vomiting
- Gas problem
Have you ever noticed? Waking up in the morning feeling heavy – this can sometimes be an indication of the liver.
Causes & Risk Factors
There are some common causes of liver problems, such as:
- Excess oily food
- Alcohol
- Too much paracetamol/pain medication
- Excess sugar
- Obesity
- Virus infection
Some of our overindulgence habits – fried oil, rich food, heavy dinner after 11 pm, these increase stress on the liver.
How to Keep It Healthy Naturally
They are very simple, possible with a little effort.
- Warm water with lemon in the morning
- Walk for minimum 30 minutes every day.
- Do not eat too much fried food
- Keep garlic, turmeric, coriander leaves in diet
- Sufficient water
- Regular sleep
- Bitter foods — such as bitter gourds or neem leaves — at least twice a week
You will see that the body will feel lighter.
Things to Know
- Does the liver hurt?
There is no direct pain, but pressure or discomfort may be felt on the right side.
- Is fatty liver very dangerous?
Not initially, but it can progress to cirrhosis if not properly cared for.
- Can the liver regenerate itself?
Yes, it regenerates itself even when damaged up to 70%—just keep the lifestyle right.
- Which fruit is good for the liver?
Apple, guava, papaya, and citrus fruits are good.
- Is lemon water really beneficial in the morning on an empty stomach?
Yes, it helps in digestion and detoxification.
Conclusion
Finally, let me say one thing – we do not give importance to most of the body organs, the liver is one of them. But it is this liver that cleans, gives strength and protects our body throughout the day. So with a little care, many big problems can easily be avoided.
Ask yourself once – “Did I do something good for my liver today?” If not, start now. Your body will thank you.
