Do you know that we breathe about 12 to 20 times per minute? But most of the time, we don’t realize it. In this way, we can start discussing one of the most important systems of our body, the respiratory system. Breathing is such an important and natural thing that we often take for granted. But if this system stops working for even a moment, we will lose our existence. This system has some special steps. We will discuss this in detail in the next discussion.
Definition
The respiratory system is our breathing system, through which we take oxygen from the air and expel carbon dioxide from the body. Nose, Throat, Trachea, Lungs, and Diaphragm – These organs work together. If this system is not functioning properly, the body does not get oxygen, which is very important for our life.
The Main Organs of the Respiratory System
Different organs work together in this system, like, nose and mouth, sinus, pharynx (throat), larynx, trachea, diaphragm, lungs, bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli.
1. Nose and Mouth: We take the outside air in. Moreover, the work of respiration starts from here.
2. Sinus: Regulates mild head pressure and warms and humidifies the air.
3. Pharynx: A passageway for air from the nose and mouth to the lungs.
4. Larynx or Voice box: Produces the voice and controls the airway.
5. Trachea: Moves air downwards.
6. Bronchi: The bronchi divide into two parts and enter the lungs.
7. Bronchioles: The bronchioles are the tubes that branch off into smaller branches.
8. Alveoli: These are tiny air sacs where gases are exchanged (oxygen and carbon dioxide).
9. Lungs: This is the main organ where complete gas exchange takes place.
10. Diaphragm: It is a type of muscle that helps in breathing.
How it Works
Let’s understand our breathing process in simple terms.
- First, we breathed,
- Air then enters the lungs through the nose,
- There, in the alveoli, the small sacs of the lungs, oxygen mixes with the blood and reaches every cell in the body through the blood.
- The carbon dioxide released from the cells is then returned to the lungs through the blood and exhaled.
Common Problems
Actually, the respiratory system is a sensitive organ system. Its common problems are:
1. Asthma: Shortness of breath due to constriction of airways. It causes difficulty in breathing, wheezing, pressure in the chest, or a cough.
2. Cold and cough: Caused by viral or bacterial infection. Sore throat, sneezing, coughing, and runny nose are the main symptoms.
3. Bronchitis: This problem occurs when the bronchi of the airways are inflamed. Its main symptoms are cough, phlegm, chest heaviness, chest pain, shortness of breath, etc.
4. Pneumonia: It is an infection of the lungs.
5. Allergy: In this case, the body’s immune system reacts to a harmless substance as harmful.
6. COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease): It is a long-term lung disease in which the airways gradually close.
Also, there are various other diseases in the respiratory system but the above-mentioned diseases are common or the most common.
Cause of Problems
- Polluted air
- Smoking
- Allergy
- Depression and stress
- Unhealthy eating habits and drinking less water
- Lack of exercise
- Genetic or congenital problems
- Cold weather or viral infection
Symptoms
- Difficulty in breathing
- Cough (dry or with phlegm)
- Feeling of pressure in the chest
- A feeling of gasping or suffocation
- Frequent colds
- Whistling sound during breathing
Natural Solutions/Tips/Remedies
So we can follow some natural solutions to keep our respiratory system safe.
- Practice breathing every day
- Use mask to avoid dust and pollution
- Say goodbye to smoking forever. It is the biggest enemy of the respiratory system.
- Drink warm water, especially in the morning and at night
- Eat foods high in antioxidants and vitamin C
- Stay clean
- Adequate sleep
- Garlic, ginger, tulsi, green tea, and honey – these are friends of the respiratory system, so their use takes the respiratory system one step further.
Did You Know?
- We breathe about 20,000 times a day,
- Laughter and singing are a type of lung exercise.
- Lungs are the only organ of the human body which floats in water,
- Our breathing rate changes with emotion,
- Not only the lungs, but our skin also plays a very minor role in respiration.
- A human takes about 60 to 70 crore breaths in their lifetime.
Conclusion
Well, we do the most important thing in our body to breathe continuously – without even thinking about it! But as simple as it sounds, it is important to take care of this system. If the respiratory system is not healthy, the body becomes not only tired but also weak. So let’s take at least 5 minutes of mindful breathing every day – to experience life a little better.
